Equity

Equity Statement on behalf of the Solano Adult Education Consortium.

The Solano Adult Education Consortium is committed to ensuring that all students have real opportunities to succeed. Our job is to make programs enjoyable and equitable for all of our adult learners.

We honor the experiences of our Black, Indigenous, students of color, and LGBTQ+ students. We acknowledge the barriers that keep many of these students from the education and skills they need, including systems that unfairly disadvantage students who are seeking a better education and a better life.

We acknowledge the trauma of recent events, including the uneven effects of COVID-19 on Black, Indigenous, Latino, and Pacific Islander families in California, and the widespread police brutality against Black individuals, as so painfully shown by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and too many others.

In response to a clear need for action to promote educational equity, diversity, and inclusion, we have taken the following steps:

Formed an Anti-Racism Work Group to identify and lead equity training for staff
Launched a climate survey to learn more about students’ experiences with our programs
Launched a staff demographic survey to learn more about those who serve our adult students

As part of ongoing efforts, we also commit to the following steps:

Review recruitment and hiring practices to see how well we attract and retain staff who reflect the diverse identities of our students
Adopt Ethnic Studies curriculum at schools where districts have approved it
Revisit this vision statement as part of our annual plan process
